Looking down on the town of Caerwent. The outline of the Roman Walls are highlighted in yellow
Caerwent (Venta Silurum) has been a town since the 1st Century AD after the Celtic Tribe (The Silures) who lived in that area of Wales at the time; were conquered by Leg II Aug (Second Augusta Legion) within a few years of the Roman Invasion of Britain in 43AD. The town continued to flourish well into the 3rd - 4th Century AD, and considerable stretches of the walls and defence towers still survive today and well worth a visit if in the area.
